NAMMU meets- Graphic Communications Intern reflects

Special Insource report from NAMMU Toronto Chapter Meeting June 8

Insource was thrilled to be part of yet another Toronto chapter meeting of the National Association of Major Mail Users (NAMMU) that was held Thursday, June 8th at the Canada Post South Central Letter Processing Plant located at 969 Eastern Avenue in Toronto. This was my first time attending so I didn’t know what to expect. However, I came with the intention of learning as much as I could. Throughout the day I had the opportunity to hear various directors and members share their updates on regular Canada Post performance as well as mailing industry news.
NAMMU is a not-for-profit association representing businesses active in the mailing industry. Electronic alternatives and substitution are going through constant changes worldwide, and post offices have been adjusting to meet these challenges. Contributing to these meetings that only occur a few times a year means helping the Canadian postal industry remain a world leader.
After enjoying refreshments and getting settled down, NAMMU Director Patrick Bartlett presented its Canada Post performance review taken from the past few months. We also had committees working with Canada Post represented by Bassett Direct, Transcontinental, and Lowe-Martin speak about implementing and improving Order Acceptance/Surcharges, Postal Code Targeting (PCT)/Data, and Product Changes/EST/Equipment. What makes NAMMU meetings different than your average seminar is the open-dialogue format. Vendors in attendance working closely with Canada Post had the power to voice their opinions regarding Canada Post’s strategies and direction – or just about any issues or updates they came across regarding the mail industry. The effectiveness of having an immediate response straight from a Canada Post director in the same room surely beats your typical email conversation.
My favourite part (aside from the breakfast) was hearing from NAMMU Chair Kristi Kanitz, who recently took part in a mailing forum with the theme “Making Informed Connections” held in Maryland, Washington. It’s always good to hear about innovative technologies being developed in the U.S. and find what value they can bring to the industry here in Canada. She touched upon various mailing ideas being tested, such as USPS creating a mobile application that creates stronger connectivity for customers. For example, imagine an app that lets you know what type of mail you’ll be receiving on any given day before it reaches your doorstep! With the beta previously set at 6,000 users, USPS has stated that around two million users are currently registered with the app – and participation is growing. This app would not only benefit customers, but would help mailing companies to track mail data and focus on trends in the market. Kanitz went on to reveal more mailing solutions, such as adding a GPS tracking system on mail, as well as an option to forward mail or change locations to better align with customer needs. Users will be able to discover exactly where their mail is in the system, and have a stronger connection with the mailing industry as well. We can’t wait to see these solutions come in to play once they’re integrated into Canada’s mailing systems.
Canada Post ended the day with a scheduled plant tour of the facility where, on average, 9 million mail pieces are processed every day. Seeing the interconnected workspaces with sophisticated machinery and time-sensitive staff was quite impressive. Every day you can find 2,000 Canadian employees receiving, transferring, processing, and shipping – all at ridiculously high speeds. Our tour guide even mentioned that actions are measured in seconds, meaning if a certain task wasn’t completed within a 10-second time period, it could potentially disrupt the entire process. I would recommend that you visit the facility yourself, to witness first-hand just how efficiency Canada Post operates.
Overall, I would say that my first NAMMU meeting was an interesting one. NAMMU meetings are a great refresher for those who want to stay up-to-date with Canada Post’s initiatives and mailing industry news. It’s also a great way for dealers and equipment providers to stay current on the newest mailing technologies. These events cater more to experienced members in the industry, although I do see benefits for novices in attending and staying informed.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017 – and as always, Insource will be there, continuing our commitment to keep you up to date on the latest industry news and developments.

insource-event-jim-williams-kirk-rudyJim is currently the Director of Marketing for Kirk-Rudy, Inc., a 49 year old manufacturer of high quality industrial equipment used in the mailing, printing and packaging industries. By the time Jim graduated high school in 1983 he had two employees and that summer moved to a main street location and tripled production and sales volume in one month.

After 25 years of an extremely successful printing company and store front copy shop, Jim sold the operation and continued to pursue his love of the printed word by working for MAIL Magazine as the Printing Technology Editor and Sales/Marketing Director. He also became Exhibition Manager of the MAILCOM Trade Shows, co-sponsored by the magazine.

Graph Expo 2016: Small but mighty

graph-expo-collage-finail-003While it was smaller in physical size compared to the previous venue, Graph Expo 2016 made up for it with compelling and exciting live demonstrations, helpful educational sessions and new technology at seemingly every turn.

As a first-time attendee to Graph Expo 2016 September 25-28 in Orlando, Florida, I had a lot to see and a lot to learn. My experience was both inspiring and humbling. I was introduced to some of the industry’s leading manufacturers for the very first time. I also said hello again to manufacturers with whom I was already familiar. It was my genuine privilege to meet people in the printing industry who were so knowledgeable and also so inspiring. The education and information that our vendors shared with me was absolutely extraordinary. Graph Expo this year was quite hands-on and interactive, with live demonstrations and leading technologies virtually from wall to wall.

I had the pleasure to see the premiere of the RISO ComColor GD Series, a high-speed, full-colour inkjet technology that prints up to 160 ppm. The GD Series introduces a 5th colour (grey) that make the blacks much more intense and colours more vivid. The GD is the world’s fastest cut sheet inkjet printer (A4, single side short edge) using 5 colours, and is scheduled for release in early 2017. RISO also had information-packed sessions running all day long.

Therm-O-Type was launching its NSF Ultra Die Cutting/Foil Stamping Press, which is ideal for finishing and enhancing digital output, and can also be used to die cut and score pocket/presentation folders. This remarkable press is the result of over 27 years of collaborative work with the foil stamping, embossing and die cutting industries.

Kirk-Rudy had a hands-on booth with serveral technologies on display – including the latest Phoenix variable-data inkjet printer. The Phoenix meets the increasing and rigorous demands for printing variable addresses, graphics, dates, times, barcodes, serial numbers and text on coated and uncoated substrates. Coupled with Kirk-Rudy’s product-handling systems, it’s one of the most versatile solutions on the market today.

At the W + D booth, I had the pleasure of meeting many of the W+D manufacturers and reps, all eager to share their knowledge about W + D’s ultimate inserting solutions through both video and consultations. Highlighted was W+D’s new ConceptD high-speed inkjet envelope overprint press and high-performance, servo-driven BB700 envelope inserter, which I saw operating. The ConceptD is the first high-performance, industrial-grade digital inkjet specifically optimized for the growing personalized direct mail market.

Spiel Associates, founded in New York in 1963, showcased its mastery of book bindery equipment as well as its wide array of finishing equipment – from case binding equipment, stitchers, creasers, UV coaters and booklet makers, to table-top punching machinery and plastic coil binding machines. The company also specializes in used and reconditioned machines.

CDR Graphics (Petratto and SCS) had the dynamic Petratto Metro running boxes at full-speed. The Metro makes it possible to customize a machine to suit individual needs. This is done by adding the required modules – such as feeders, folding sections, turning devices, etc. Several units can be connected to produce many complex applications. The units can also be separated and used as independent machines. This allows production of applications that more expensive machines can’t produce.

Insource is proud to be the Canadian distributor of MB Bäuerle folding systems. One of its many products is the MPM multipageMAILER that feeds, folds and seals an envelopes inline using the same paper as the interior pages. The company has developed and manufactured print finishing machines for over 60 years, and today specializes in automated folding and inserting systems and system solutions.

Finally, there were many helpful learning sessions, including seminars and special presentations that discussed new technology, future trends and how-to business strategies. Being a female and new to the industry, I especially enjoyed the Girls Who Print at Printerverse that featured special guests and activities – including the “Meet the Mentors” discussion panel of successful women entrepreneurs in the printing industry.

All in all, I think that Graph Expo 2016 was a huge success. I was told that the previous Chicago location was larger. That aside, I found this year’s event to be a positive experience with a vast array of technologies – from wide-format printing to table-top finishing equipment. Small but mighty, as they say!

Even though we did have over a dozen Canadian exhibitors at Graph Expo 2016, I’m still looking forward to seeing Canadian exhibitors and visitors, who were unable to make it to Orlando, at the next big industry tradeshow on Canadian soil.

When your customer demands job integrity, how do you know the answer?

camera-system-2When your customer demands job integrity, how do you know the answer?

Gain customers by providing proof! Using a camera system will guarantee that all work is 100% verified with an outgoing date and time stamp. The right camera system is flexible, capable of moving within your production environment, allowing you to complete specific and unique jobs with integrity and accuracy.

Is a camera system really necessary when we have staff ready to verify the job? Simply put, people cannot do what a camera system can when it comes to verification. Naturally human beings are less reliable due to fatigue, distractions, time restraints (rushing), multi tasking and just plain old human error (honest mistakes). A person can state that the results are accurate, but where is the reliability and the reassurance proof? Matchmate software will catch errors and improve quality and production in a manner that people cannot. Labor costs will be decreased with the improved efficiency provided by the proficiency of software as compared to human checkers.

Without verification or reporting it is impossible to provide your customer with absolute physical proof. This reassurance is how you will set yourself apart from the rest and will allow you to gain a competitive edge! MatchMate creates logs of each production run and every piece is tracked and recorded, therefore information can be passed onto your customer; the perfect value add. As well, you have the peace of mind that every piece of mailing corresponds with the others of the same set, therefore you never have to worry about any mistakes going out to the end user; you sleep well.  Be confident with total accuracy and the tangible evidence, keep everyone at ease with the integrity of the production verification camera system.
